Seriously? Oh I’m so scared (sarcasm)
It is no surprise to anyone that i’m not a fan of the current social justice movements impacting our communities. It’s not that I think inequalities shouldn’t be addressed (I very much think they should be effectively addressed) but rather than i question the tactics of harassment, bullying, and attempted intimidating of anyone who doesn’t buy into certain opinions wholesale. I’m very much a fan of free speech, discourse, and discussion.
Imagine my amusement then when I began receiving emails about my etsy shop from a “concerned community member.” My refusal to remove certain items has led to veiled threats like
“I just want to make sure that I’m correctly understanding you so that I can accurately convey your answers to the others who are concerned about this!”
You know, with the undercurrent of ‘bow to our demands or we’re going to fuck with you.’ I’ve about half a dozen, maybe more emails from the same person about this, even though I have indicated that their discomfort is their own issue, and I”m not changing my etsy site and even though I have requested that communication cease.
Let the games begin. I have had better people than these come at me. It’s almost laughable that someone would try to intimidate me like this. I did point out that perhaps if they are so concerned about social injustice they should stop harassing me and get out there and do something worthwhile to change the inequalities that really are twisting and corrupting our world, to which I was assured
“that online work has its place in the landscape in which we live today, as part of a larger strategy of coalition-building — but I understand that there are disparities along many lines of differences between us in how that tends to play out.
I’d say that my working group is primarily focused on advocacy and activism, but we sometimes entertain fantasies that our larger spiritual community might be a place where we could all care for each other and protect each other from micro- and macroaggressions and harm. (That’s why I’m the one messaging you, as a fellow white person!)”
You know what i entertain fantasies of? A community that prioritizes veneration of the Gods and actual religion. Maybe a community that doesn’t feel the need to demand group think. Definitely a community that doesn’t pull such assed up passive aggressive attempts at emotional extortion. This is the worst kind of slacktivism that I’ve seen in awhile and I’m sure these people entertain notions that they are equivalent to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X because they sent some emails and tweeted footage of actual people out there on the streets trying to make a difference. Come for me. I”ve been Heathen probably longer than y’all have been alive. Have at it.

So I’m confused, what’s their issue with your store, and why do they feel it so important to identify themselves as white?

Went to your shop to refresher my memory–at my age always do that 😆– with the narrowest mind I could muster, I couldn’t find one item that would be offensive. Go figure!

1. wtf is wrong with your store? I see no issue with it!
2. it’s a criminal offence to attempt to shut down, threaten, cease work or intimidate store/business owners here. It boarders on libel, with trade having very protected laws. If this is serious (which I doubt it is) I would recommend you read up on US trade laws and protections of traders.

It’s the Bacchic Lives Matter buttons. I have a few up for sale left over from a project my husband did in remembrance of the atrocities committed against his people -highlighting that the fight for justice isn’t a modern thing. this has been going on a long time, any time someone is marked out as lesser or as a threat to established authority.

Ah, I see you answered the question as I was typing it. I don’t see that button as a problem. It’s just making a different point.

you’re being awfully restrained here. there were a lot more threats than you included in this post, up to attempts to extort money out of you. this shit is not okay.

Extort money???!!! Has the purity of the movement denigrated into criminality?

WTF?!
Is this someone’s idea of a joke, seriously?
I’m very sorry to hear this, Galina. All you’re trying to do is to remain focused on what’s actually important (the gods) and yet these thought police wannabes insist on trying to pull you into their BS.
I don’t know how they can justify their actions. Not liking someone would never hold up in a court of law if it turned into a legal issue of threats.

Very sorry to hear about all this stupidity. Your store is awesome, and you’re doing good Work. I shake my head.

Except for, you know, the micro- and macroaggressions that they themselves perpetrate against anyone in their “spiritual community” who doesn’t think the way they do. Like, you know, harassing you for selling some buttons they don’t like. That kind of aggression is apparently perfectly fine.

“Bacchic Lives Matter” is what’s causing all this uproar?? Well I’ll just see if we can’t get some “AFA LIVES MATTER” to take the heat off you, ok?

I really wish people who did this kind of thing would get jobs and hobbies that don’t include harassment and blackmail. Sorry you have to deal with knobs!

Problem is, they make it their entire lives to throw stones at people who even remotely “offend” their tender sensibilities

What exactly is micro-aggression? Is it only in the eye of the offended?

@ Virginia Carper Someone once said, “You can never give offence, only take it”. A micro-aggression is a small insignificant (to people of logical minds) word or phrase that has the potential (in the warped mind of an SJW) to become a severe threat to the safety of an “oppressed” person(s),

Well…aren’t they special little snowflakes? These people are unlikely to ever physically show up to cause trouble, but if they do they are likely the sort of cowards that will only do so if they can bring overwhelming numbers (which they will mistake for ‘force’) to bare upon their target. It’s a remote possibility but do keep an extra eye out if the threats escalate.
On the other hand, for them to be so irate as to risk breaking various laws by threatening you and your business you must be doing things right Galina, not that validation from such ilk was ever needed but there it is anyway.

Personally I try to stay out of politics and social activism, but even being neutral on an issue seems to get some people riled up these days. “I’m sorry, but I just don’t feel strongly either way about Inflammatory Topic.” This statement has gotten me gasps of horror and blank looks of confusion in equal amounts. “What do you mean? Don’t you care? Don’t you know how important Inflammatory Topic is? Being neutral makes you as bad as Those People I Disagree With so you should change!”

Yet another reason why I named the blog “Polytheism Uncucked.” They don’t bother me save to scream “RACIST!!!” in drive-by complaints from anon accounts: I’m spared their passive-aggressive “calling out” and veiled threats because they know going in that I’m The Enemy.
