    Love the style on the Hebe card. It is similar to the cover of ‘Sigyn: Our Lady of the Staying Power’.

    Yikes! Antinous in rage appears to be holding His own severed head. It’s so different from the first card devoted to Him. Can the Artist provide some of the back story to this image?

      The one who commissioned the card–namely, myself–can.

      If the image shocks you, and shocks you out of thinking of Antinous only as the “pretty boy” nearly everyone seems to think He is (which is mostly people who have no idea who He really is), then it has accomplished the intended purpose. Even in this wounded and bloody and rage-filled image of Him, there is beauty and awe and an explosion of the numinous.

      This is a fairly close depiction of one of the earliest unbidden visions I had of Antinous after I began cultus to him in 2002, and it has never seen artistic representation–nor have I discussed it with many people–since that time. However, every time anyone has ever referred to “Antinous the Liberator,” which many who have never met me do now, they are–knowingly or not–referring to this specific image of Him.

        Thank you for the explanation. I find the image fascinating and more compelling than the earlier prayer card where He looks so peaceful and beneficent. The severed head that He holds seems identical to His own. Is that intentional? I also get the impression that although it is severed, the eyes are aware, thus consciousness remains. His spear/scepter is unusual as well – trident-like – is there a story behind it?

        Yes, that is His own head…the head that everyone expects, whose expression doesn’t change much and is somewhat blank, but is only on the surface…I didn’t know Wayne would make it look as if that head is looking at the viewer, but it is brilliant that He is, as if to say, “So, you thought you knew me, huh?” 😉

        In short, the spear is the one He was holding when I saw Him…there’s a lot of possible interpretations of it, but I think part is definitely lunar, and another part has to do with some “triangular thinking” on Hero/ine cultus I did with Edward Butler a few years ago, e.g. it was suggested by someone (Plutarch? I can’t quite remember) that different types of divine being were different types of triangle–Deities are equilateral triangles, something else was right triangles, and daimones were scalene…and then I suggested that perhaps Hero/ines are isosceles or something. But, whatever one’s interpretation might be, that’s what he was holding, so it is more representational than figurative, if you see what I mean…!
