Something Something Animism

I think we should make our shrines as beautiful as possible for our Gods and spirits but that doesn’t mean going out and buying junk. Oh I hate that (and if one’s tradition involves herb witchery it’s esp. bad — seriously, just use what’s in your spice cabinet). I’ve seen the anxiety in newcomers too, esp. about creating shrines and all I can say to that is this: shrines ought to be created out of love and devotion…if that’s the guiding factor, one can’t do it wrong. When you see shrines (like my own) that are lush and covered with bling, it’s not stuff I went out and bought in order to make the shrine. That shrine has been part of my life for 20-30 years and has evolved and grown. I may have bought things, but not all at once. maybe I was antiquing and found something perfect for the Gods of shrine X. it’s organic. I started as beautifully as I could within what I had. I also like the focus on animism in this post. We forget the spirits inherent in…everything and we really, really shouldn’t.

Patron Saint of Hard Times

I’m thinking about altar porn. I’d like to gripe about it a little. This has nothing to do with anything I’ve seen locally around WordPress and far more to do with past sights I’ve encountered on Instagram and Pinterest.

  1. You know, it’s funny. Lately I’ve actually been thinking about making my shrines less elaborate. Maybe it’s because of how I have it set up right now but there are times I look at it and think that I totally would get it if people thought it was just a collection of stuff rather than a shrine. One of these days I’d really love it if I had enough space for my main deities to each get Their own proper shrine.

    • I should clarify. I probably shouldn’t say “less elaborate”. What I mean to say is that I’d like to start from the ground up with functional needs met first and then filling in with trinkets later. My current shrine has that obviously or else it wouldn’t be a shrine but I have ideas on what I’d do differently if I had to start all over again
