Something Something Animism
I think we should make our shrines as beautiful as possible for our Gods and spirits but that doesn’t mean going out and buying junk. Oh I hate that (and if one’s tradition involves herb witchery it’s esp. bad — seriously, just use what’s in your spice cabinet). I’ve seen the anxiety in newcomers too, esp. about creating shrines and all I can say to that is this: shrines ought to be created out of love and devotion…if that’s the guiding factor, one can’t do it wrong. When you see shrines (like my own) that are lush and covered with bling, it’s not stuff I went out and bought in order to make the shrine. That shrine has been part of my life for 20-30 years and has evolved and grown. I may have bought things, but not all at once. maybe I was antiquing and found something perfect for the Gods of shrine X. it’s organic. I started as beautifully as I could within what I had. I also like the focus on animism in this post. We forget the spirits inherent in…everything and we really, really shouldn’t.
